Compared to the bottling from cask 960005, this one has a slightly less winey and fruity character, but it’s more dominated by typical Islay flavours. At the nose, it’s unbelievably rich in organic notes of leather, peat, burnt wood and balsamic vinegar: the overall impression is actually more medicinal than smoky. The same full-frontal attack on “dark” aromas is replicated on the palate, with an explosion of peat, wax, ash and salt… all backed by a robust malty sweetness. The sherry finish, while adding substance and depth, is not immediately recognizable as a winey overtone. The aftertaste is long, smoky and fragrant, again very balsamic. A no-compromises Islay giant at cask strength, full of raw intensity!
