Quite unique and very different from the usual gentle style of the distillery, this Bunnahabhain is quite an extreme experience: a sherry bomb that reminds of legendary whiskies from decades ago. From the start, it’s obvious that the Oloroso butt was particularly expressive, with that winey nose full of leather, raisins, coffee, and that unmistakeable note of old library with wooden shelves full of antique books. At the palate it’s just as impressive, showcasing a very dry sherry attack, followed by toasted malt, again coffee, and even eggnog! A bold style of sherried malt, of the kind that’s almost impossible to find nowadays, and with a winey intensity that tastes much older than the age statement would suggest.
