Sweet, malty and honeyed as only whiskies aged in first fill bourbon barrels can be, this young but already mature single malt from Caol Ila is very robust bodied: it was caught at the perfect moment in which the Islay flavours are still at their peak of intensity but with the harshness of youth softened by the vanilla and the fat buttery notes of the casks. Peat smoke is intense, and this time it’s of a very medicinal kind, very aromatic and full of maritime influence: its interplay with the juicy fruitiness of bananas and apples is playful and very satisfying. There is also the typical lemony note and minerality of Caol Ila, but this time they take second place compared to the sweet rounded character that provides a velvety background to the powerful peat.
