As it often happens, once again the marriage of the rich distillate from Clynelish and sherry or Marsala casks offers exquisite surprises. This bottling, at a higher strength than usual to preserve its intensity and richness, has all the trademark Clynelish traits: a very waxy and honeyed palate, intriguing organic and earthy notes, a moderate fruitiness and a touch of mustard and pepper. Sherry maturation doesn’t add strikingly winey notes, but rather interacts with the whisky to enhance its nutty nose and slightly astringent mouthfeel. What is particularly surprising about this bottling is its finale, long on leather and oak, and characterised by an unusually intense smokiness. Delicious, and full of unexpected twists
