More than a finish, for this single malt from an undisclosed Speyside distillery we can speak of a double maturation, since it spent the second half of its life in a fresh Oloroso hogshead. With such a long influence from the sherry, it’s no wonder that the result is extremely winey! At the nose it’s nutty, dry, mineral, with citrusy notes and spicy oak. At the palate, it starts raisiny, but then it immediately steers to a dry winey character. It’s also very mineral and quite clean in spite of the oakiness, with lemon rind, herbal notes and tea. Towards the end, the herbal notes grow further, as do the tannins from the oak, with echoes of cola and bergamot too. Ultimately very peppery and quite astringent.
