Following the trend of the 2013 release, this new bottling marries heavy peat with a less aggressive approach on the palate, showing that it’s possible to match extreme smokiness with a gentle, rich and caressing mouth feel. The tarry and charred notes of Islay are well matched by a soft malty sweetness, and the accurate choice of oak casks increases complexity and the winey/vegetal/fruity background. It’s a well-orchestrated symphony of smoke against a tapestry of velvety autumnal aromas. Still very maritime, but in this edition – the best of recent years – the candied orange, heather honey, peanut, banana and pipe tobacco notes are almost as fascinating as the peat & sea spray. A luscious, intense and incredibly approachable Islay malt!
