A very old, rich and smooth Islay malt, entirely matured for thirty years in a refill bourbon cask: the perfect way to retain the character of the spirit. At the nose it has all the trademark traits of the distillery, a very different style from that of its sisters on Islay: less markedly peaty, with the smoke well integrated and never screaming for attention, more oriented toward very farmy aromas and a pleasant ripe fruitiness. It’s alternatingly sweet and sour, with notes of plums jam, orange marmalade, and a whiff of passion fruit. The palate is, as expected from such a respectable age, very smooth and fat but still very lively. It starts on mineral and earthy notes, then the peat smoke shows up but with restraint, and then it turns peppery and with leathery notes. Again, the same balance of sweet and sour fruits found at the nose. The finale is particularly fruity and sooty.
