A venerable Glen Elgin matured in a second fill cask: thirty years of slow and subtle maturation have led to the perfect equilibrium between the delicate and flowery notes of this Speyside malt, and the intense aromas of tropical fruits imparted by the oak. Passion fruit, mango and a hint of grapefruit are evident both at the nose and the palate, together with hints of chamomile, honey and beeswax. It’s a very old, ripe and rich single malt with a robust, oily and thick mouthfeel, and an uncommon intensity of flavour. The overall impression remains on the dry side, though, and just before the end there is time for pepper and mustard, and a spicily tannic rush. To be savoured slowly in all its multi-layered nuances.
